Stile Antico performs music from the Sadler partbooks with organ works from the period by Magnus Williamson.
John Sadler was schoolmaster in Fotheringhay and Oundle from the 1540s to the 1570s and during that time copied large quantities of contemporary choral music. His principal set of partbooks, now in the Bodleian Library, has deteriorated over time to the point of illegibility, but thanks to the wonders of digital technology it is being restored for modern performance. Alongside polyphony by Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, this concert features organ improvisations and compositions from John Sadler’s lifetime.
Thomas Tallis: O sacrum convivium
Philip van Wilder: Aspice, Domine
William Byrd: Domine praestolamur
Robert White: Exaudiat te, Dominus
Tallis: Salvator mundi
John Taverner: Ave Dei Patris filia
