New postgraduate studentship in association with Tudor Partbooks

Postgraduate Studentship in Early Music, Newcastle University

Newcastle University’s International Centre for Music Studies invites applications from students taking a postgraduate research degree in Music (MMus, MLitt or MPhil) in the year 2015-16. Newcastle has major research strengths in music from the fourteenth century to the eighteenth, particularly in source studies, music editing, the history of the book, counterpoint, performance practice and, more broadly, social contexts.

Newcastle co-hosts the AHRC-funded project, Tudor Partbooks: the Manuscript Legacies of John Sadler, John Baldwin and their Antecedents (2014-17). This project provides numerous opportunities for participation in a collaborative research programme, and a focus for postgraduate early music studies at Newcastle.

The studentship will be awarded on academic merit to candidates with a proven interest in early music research; preference will be given to candidates intending to proceed to doctoral studies at Newcastle University.  Application is through the university’s postgraduate applications portal; applicants should state their wish to be considered for the Studentship in their research proposal.

The studentship will pay full-time fees at the Home/EU rate, plus a contribution towards living costs of at least £3,000.

• Applicants must, by Friday 8 May, hold a Firm offer for MMus, MLitt or MPhil commencing in September 2015. In exceptional cases the Studentship can be held by a doctoral student in their first year of study.

• Applicants might be invited for interview, in person or via Skype.
