On Friday (5th Feb 2016) we held the first ever 'Tudor Music Wikipedia Edit-athon' with the help of Martin Poulter, the Bodleian Library's Wikimedian-in-Residence.
For three hours on Friday afternoon we gathering in Oxford as well as connecting via the web to partipants across the UK and the US. Participants included students, academics, alumni and music-lovers all ages, most of whom were learning to edit Wikipedia for the first time. The aim was to create and improve as many Wikipedia articles relating to Tudor Music as we could within the space of just three hours.
Martin kicked off the afternoon by introducing us to how Wikipedia works and showing us the basic editing tools. We were surprised how easy it was to get editing. With the Visual Editor writing article for Wikipedia is not that different to writing with your usual word processor software. Furthermore, as Wikipedia communciates existing knowledge not new research, anyone able to read and summarise information about Tudor composers or music sources is able to contribute, making knowledge about Tudor music freely available to all via Wikipedia.
Together we created four new Wikipedia articles and made improvements to another seven. Enthusiastic participants are still working on further articles. Not bad for just 3 hours work!
There's still much work to be done on improving Tudor Music articles on Wikipedia so we hope our new Wikipedians will continue to make improvements with their new editing skills.
If you fancy having a go yourself you can find our list of suggested articles on the edit-a-thon page and here's a helpful tutorial to get you started with Wikipedia editing. Do let us know how you get on!
